In the dawn of Indian summers many people like to traverse high in Himalayas, I see many motorcyclists zooming through the narrow roads of sonmarg, this is the time to go for kashmir to ladakh tour. Rather than taking a direct flight to leh this road trip is a must for everyone who wants to escape into the nature. This road trip can be taken from may to early october.
Road status: opened for traffic,
Road condition: (Moderate rough patches at zojilla and gumri, minimarg to drass very good, drass to kargil excellent, kargil to leh very good road.)
This is one of the best road trip that you will remember for a long time, endless mountain scenery will be with you. beautiful landscapes.
This journey is one of the beautiful part of Kashmir ladakh tour. The long and arduous journey starts from srinagar and when you leave Srinagar to sonmarg, you will see the village landscape of gaderbal, kangan, sekwas, and sonmarg is beautifully located on the river sindh offering some scenic views of flowing water. The peaks of sonmarg are testimony to the alpine beauty, the last village of Kashmir can be seen after few kilometers from sonmarg. tiny wooden houses cringed beneath fringe of pines. The accent starts from baltal, and many places can be seen on the way like captain mode, India gate, etc from the top of zojilla the mountains look clear with caps of snow. After crossing the mighty and notorious zojilla pass you can stop by Zero point and have cup of tea. then drive through the picturesque mini marg, verdant meadows accompanied by gushing sindh on the one side and the bordering Mushkon valley on the other side. You can clearly watch the peaks of tiger hill and tololing. continue the drive rapidly towards drass, “Drass is considered one of the coldest inhabited place of ladakh, the winters are quite freezing here many people migrate to srinagar valley from drass.
Drass War Memmorial, It is beautifully located in drass close by the road, so you can easily find it. just take a break over here. here is a army canteen where you can grab a cup of tea and then visit the adjoining museum, which portrays the kargil conflict with good description. you can also visit the samadhi of “veer jawans” soilders who got killed in the war. The Next stop will be kargil, a sleepy town, a very old town which is there since the inception of silk route or the trade route. Kargil was a pitstop where people used to stay and barter their goods with the imported commodities bought from central Asia.
Getting ready for journey, it is very important to use a good car and tires are in good condition, if the vehicle has less ground clearance don’t put much load in it because zojilla road is bad in some places. Always cover luggage rack with rain sheet, weather mostly changes at zojilla, the best tip is to start early morning from srinagar, so you don’t get stuck amid the Army convey vehicles which will eventually consume lot of your time. Once you cross zojilla everything looks different,
